About La Familia

The Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Education (OMSE) established the La Familia Peer Mentoring Program in order support the the college transition and retention of first-year Latino students at the University of Maryland. First-year mentees are paired with highly-qualified sophomore, junior and senior peer mentors who help to facilitate academic and personal growth opportunities in the form of workshops, socials, and community service events. This purposeful and consistent interaction between mentees and mentors supports and challenges students to strive for excellence in every area of their lives.

Our mentees have shared that La Familia helped them to develop:

  • Connectedness to the university and peers
  • Feeling of competency and self-efficacy
  • Grades and academic achievement
  • Improved social skills and attitudes
  • Graduation
