Student Employment

OMSE provides highly visible services to University of Maryland students, parents, alumni, faculty, administrative personnel, and visitors. Student that work on our team are expected to be a professional reflection of the OMSE office. While contributing quality service to OMSE, student staff will also gain professional and tangible experiences that will enhance their resume and prepare them for a competitive job market after graduation. Each year, OMSE hires 8-10 student staff members.

Job Description
All members of the OMSE student staff team will be assigned duties as needed based on the highest priority job needing coverage during their scheduled work times. Additional hours will be scheduled as needed to cover special events and promotion opportunities. All staff members will be expected to attend training sessions and regular update meetings as scheduled. Notifications and office information disseminated through email are expected to be read and acknowledged in a timely fashion. Applicants must have Federal Work-Study.

Qualifications for Employment

  •  Experienced with computers and office equipment (fax and copy machines)
  • Proven customer service skills and knowledge of proper office etiquette
  • Must have thorough knowledge of office programs and philosophies in order to answer questions and direct inquiries to proper staff members

Responsibilities

  • Serve as front desk receptionist in the office
  • Provide individual and group assistance and information for students, faculty, and staff who visit OMSE
  • Manage visitor sign-in/announcement procedure
  • Answer telephone calls and take accurate messages and/or follow prescribed telephone forwarding procedures• Assist with routine office procedures such as filing, photocopying, bulk mail processing, etc.
  • Assist with promoting and staffing OMSE events during the year such as open houses, information sessions, etc
  • Set up OMSE-owned equipment and tables and chairs for reserved events when needed
  • Set up cultural display cases & put up promotion information in OMSE bulletin boards
